Nicole - thanks for alerting us to that piece. We have made contact with the NBPA so that Mr Jarrett can put forward his point of view on this site and, if he was quoted out of conext, is given the chance of reply.

Jarrett says claims are false - Read: http://www.obv.org.uk

Keith Jarrett's remarks were made out of context. In fact his comments were those of parents who had concerns about the escalating rise of gun and knife crime among teenagers. Something which he intended to highlight in his speech. - The Observer journalist's headline should have read: "Parents demand more searches"

Jarrett has been personally attacked for speaking on behalf of parents...people must start questioning what they read before jumping to conclusions or believing what they see at face value.

SV, thanks for your contribution. In a way, you have answered your own question - our communities need to work with the police and they, in turn, need to gather intelligence from us. There is an issue here, with witness protection which Cllr Patrick Vernon highlights in his comment in the previous post. I know several independent members of the Metropolitan Police Authority and the Operation Trident advisory board believe much much more needs to be done on tackling supply side issues - they are right, this is something the government simply has not got to grips with yet. But to some extent all of the above address a horse which has already bolted - what we really need to concentrate on is why there is the demand for these weapons, never mind a ready supply? why are our young people turning to guns? those issues are much more difficult to deal with. I can't but think that we live in a culture where we increasinly define people by what they have as opposed to who they are - consumerism is rampant in our communities. May be I am wrong - just a thought.

Also, I am not against stop and search per se - what I object to is the call to escalate its use for the sake of it when the returns are relatively minimal.

Well, something has to be done. It is not acceptable that because you are black you are more likely to die from being shot, you are more likely to carry a weapon.

Propose actions that will bring black gun crime down to the levels of white gun crime and then we can move on.

I fear we have reached a tipping point with so many black youngsters getting killed that any action to stop it seems reasonable.

If you think these proposals are bad, just think what 'could' happen if it is not sorted out sooner rather than later. Ordinary families (black or white) have had enough.

At the end of the day the best way to sort this is for families to pick up the phone to the police and tell them where the guns are before their son, brother, sister, daughter, father or mother gets killed.
