Not Red nor Yellow! We want free & fair elections in Thailand

So the shootings and killings of innocent people has abaited in Thai government sanctioned bloodbath. According to very conservative government figures, at least 60 people have been killed since 10th April when the “Red Shirts” started their campaign for immediate elections.

It is too early to know how many people have died in and around the “Red Shirt Camp”, but we do know that at least three foreign journalists are amongst the dead. The words “Our security operations… have been successful” crawled out of the mouth of a government bureaucrat, however what happened in Bangkok last night was nothing less than a serious affront to democratic freedoms and human dignity.

Though the “Red Shirts” a group supported and allegedly bankrolled by Thaksin Shinawatra (Thailand’s answer to Silvio Berlusconi -  a corrupt billionaire) are by no means entirely innocent and there were armed gangs amongst them, but this is beside the point. English born and Oxford educated, Abhisit Vejjajiva is the leader of the ruling Thai Democrat Party, and has pledged populist policies with the slogan “Putting People First”. Contrary to their name and slogan, Abhisit was appointed as Prime Minister by the King after a military coup removed the democratically elected Shinawatra.

From reports sent to TMP coming out of Thailand; it is believed that more than half of the population want immediate free and fair elections and to decide for themselves who should govern their country. The protest in Bangkok’s commercial district may be over but the campaign for immediate free and fair democratic elections is ongoing. We believe the Abhisit Government made a grave error to rescind the offer of calling an election within 30 days to instead sanctioned the deaths of its own citizens, the organisers of this demonstration believe the current Thai government needs to be held to account through the ballot box and secondly through an independent criminal court.

We stand with the people of Thailand who don’t want to be shot by criminal gangs or their own army. This campaign is for democracy and about the desire and belief that in a democracy, the Monarch has no right to select the Prime Minister, instead it should be the peaceful and democratic will of the Thai people.

We have just over 24 hours and need as many people as possible to support this movement for democracy. Something akin to the Green revolution in Iran is necessary but also to be successful this time.

Campaigning peacefully alone the Thai people have little chance of victory, but with international solidarity, the people of Thailand may be able to win free and fair elections immediately.
