By South London Anti-Fascists / @SouthLondonAF
We are sending an updated call-out in light of recent developments around Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (i.e. Tommy Robinson) and Kevin Carroll’s ‘walk’ to Woolwich and our opposition to it. The meet-up details remain the same as before (see below) – read on for further details.
DATE: Saturday 29th June (Armed Forces Day)
TIME: 11:00 am. It is important that people arrive no later than 11.30am at the meeting point as EDL members will be in the area after this point.
ASSEMBLY POINT: Old Coronet Cinema / Gateway House, John Wilson St, Woolwich, London, SE18 6QQ
Nearest Rail Station: Woolwich Dockyard (National Rail)
Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/161516007362471/
BACKGROUND: You will be aware that the two EDL leaders, “Tommy Robinson” and Kevin Carroll were planning to take part in a sponsored walk this Saturday, cynically exploiting the situation of a sick child by claiming the walk was only about raising money for cancer treatment, rather than spreading racist ideology and hatred against Muslims. In fact, the cancer charity involved has now refused money from the EDL, but will be replacing any money returned so the child won’t lose out. You can donate to Amelia-Mae’s cause here.
Tommy Robinson also asked EDL supporters to assemble from 1pm in Woolwich, without insignia, flags or other identifying materials and banners. With this they hoped to use children as human shields and to gain a propaganda victory as a “reasonable” and charitable group.
CURRENT SITUATION: In the last two days there has been speculation and rumour about whether Tommy Robinson’s walk from central London to Woolwich will in fact take place, whether the route will change and what our response should be.
The current situation is that the police have asked the Home Secretary to ban the “walk” from taking place in its entirety, with Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll under threat of arrest if they walk into Woolwich.
However, this does not mean they will not attempt to be in Woolwich in some capacity and during the day, and we also know that other EDL groups and supporters are planning to gather in Woolwich.
OUR RESPONSE: South London Anti-fascists are still calling for people to meet at 11am, at the address above, as per our previous call-out. On the day we will be able to decide an appropriate response to the situation on the ground.
If Tommy Robinson and the EDL are in the area, we want to provide a community response that condemns their presence. We support a variety of tactics including physically confronting fascists. In this situation though, given the risk of arrest and the likelihood of children and families being in the area, we are asking that people don’t use a black bloc tactic that will make you easily identifiable to the police and fascists.
BE PREPARED: We ask that people attend in their own clothes, form their own affinity groups and travel together; this doesn’t stop people bringing face coverings to protect their identities at certain points during the day. People should also bring food, clothing for different types of weather, good footwear, sun screen and water as we will be out and moving about throughout the day. If you need help finding a group to travel with, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
BACKUP PLAN: If Tommy Robinson and others do not come to Woolwich, we will be leafleting local estates to make them aware of the EDL attempting to exploit the situation in Woolwich and the death of Lee Rigby. We will have leaflets on the day but you can also download copies from here.
If you would like to help with making banners on Friday evening, please email us for more details.
