Tenants and squatters unite for secure housing

by Josh Hall / @JoshAJHall

Last night council tenants, squatters, private tenants and MPs gathered in Parliament to consider the next steps in the campaign for secure housing.

The meeting, called by Defend Council Housing and the House of Commons Council Housing Group, sought to connect those fighting against the implementation of aspects of the Localism Bill [doc] with those seeking to improve conditions in the private rented sector, maintain and bolster squatters’ rights, and prevent political evictions.

From Feminist Fightback/Friends of Hackney Nurseries

Friends of Hackney Nurseries

Join us and Friends of Hackney Nurseries on Sunday 30th May, 11am-2pm at London Fields for fun, games and organising to save childcare provision!

At the end of April at least 8 community nurseries in Hackney were informed of immediate cuts in their budget of up to 60%, or about £50,000. The Flying Bike Picket! Saturday 22 May – support the BA workers & the Right to Strike!

From Workers’ Climate Action:

Flying bike wheel
On Saturday 22 May, Workers’ Climate Action will be organising a critical mass bike ride in solidarity with the BA cabin crew workers’ struggle and in defence of the right to strike.

UPDATE
British Airways bosses have once again secured a high court injunction against the strike on the basis of a technicality with the balloting process. This represents a further attack on working-class democracy and civil liberties in general; workers who voted overwhelmingly to strike are having their right to do so taken away from them and are expected to simply accept, without any option to protest or dissent, contractual changes in which they had no say whatsoever.

Judges have ruled that the BA strike, recently banned by the High Court on a balloting technicality (see here), can go ahead (see the BBC website and the Guardian website for more).

Open Thread: I’m an Al Jazeera News’ Election Pundit tonight. What should I say?

Thanks to the debate I had with Margaret Hodge MP for Barking, your friendly neighbourhood blogger and community activist/organiser has been asked to speak the infamous Qatar based news channel: Al Jazeera at 2.30am (British Summer Time/1:30 GMT) tonight/Friday morning.

They have asked me to discuss the local and general election results in Barking & Dagenham which will either show that the British National Party have control of the local authority or not.
