Tomorrow, 20 January, Nadine Dorries’ proposed Sex Education (Required Content) Bill, which seeks to secure abstinence education for girls only, is due to have its ‘second reading’ in the House of Commons. In May 2011 MPs voted the Bill through its first stage by 67 to 61 votes.
A demonstration opposing the Bill is due to take place outside Parliament on the same day, supported by the British Humanist Association (BHA), Abortion Rights, Liberal Conspiracy, Education for Choice, the National Secular Society, Parents and Carers for Sex and Relationships Education (P4SRE), the Socialist Party, Youth Fight for Jobs, Feminist Fightback, Queers Against the Cuts, Slut Means Speak Up, Bristol Feminist Network and Left Front Art. Although it is unlikely that the Bill will proceed further than second reading, and perhaps may not get time to be debated, the demonstration and other actions have been arranged to draw attention to yet another attack by a political and often religiously motivated lobby on good quality SRE which could, if implemented, impact negatively on young people’s health and education.

Cleaners are staging a sit-in at the Corporation of London’s Guildhall in protest at the inadequate response of their employer, the contractor Sodexo over the abusive treatment of women employees.
Channel 4′s Dispatches Brave Oh-Dearism: Lost girls of South Africa
South Africa, the home of the two “global elders”, Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Since Mandela’s Presidency, it has been affectionately dubbed the Rainbow Nation, and changed from a pariah state which suffered the most effective academic, economic and cultural global boycott in history to now being the host of the first FIFA World Cup on the African continent. Despite its turbulent history and now 16 years of “self rule”, there are troubling persistent problems that remained common place and in some areas worsened since the historic Mandela Presidency.

The British television programme, Channel 4′s Dispatches on 23rd May documented the story of four South African girls aged 11 to 13 as they struggle to come to terms with the crimes committed against them and fight the social stigma that comes with the abuse. These girls are shown and genuinely appear to be the tragic victims who overcome their fears to pursue justice in a society where violence and misogyny is prevalent. Their stories are deeply disturbing and upsetting. There are some powerful images and testimonies of these young people some of whom are raped either by other children, their father or some other adult in their community.
Victory for Claire Finch, victory for sex workers safety!

A malicious prosecution with a happy ending.
On Thursday 29 April, in Luton Crown Court, Claire Finch was found NOT GUILTY of a criminal charge of keeping a brothel. The jury, in line with public opinion, refused to criminalise Ms Finch for working together with friends from her own home for safety. Ms Finch, her friends and colleagues, her legal team and the English Collective of Prostitutes which co-ordinated the case, celebrated this victory for rights and safety.

This case is a precedent – it forges a way for sex workers to work together from premises. Thousands of women who want to protect their safety now have the possibility of a legal defence against criminal charges. Sex workers are 10 times more likely to be attacked on the street than indoors, and it is much safer to work with someone else than to work alone. Yet the law expressly forbids this – two or more women working together are classified as a brothel.
