Holocaust Memorial Day Event – Sunday 29th January – London

Holocaust and Genocide  - Never Again!

Sunday 29th January, 3pm – 6pm

Venue: 10 Harmony Hall, Truro Road Walthamstow, E17 7BY
Tube: Walthamstow Central (Victoria Line)

Take part in an afternoon of reflection and discussion, remembering the victims of Nazi Germany 1933-1945 when 6 million Jewish people and hundreds of thousands Sinti, Roma, prisoners of war and opponents to the regime were brutally murdered. We will also remember the victims of other genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda and Darfur. Most importantly, we want to highlight the real threat that fascism poses today, and discuss how we can play our part to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

A letter from Troy Davis to his supporters

I want to thank all of you for your efforts and dedication to Human Rights and Human Kindness, in the past year I have experienced such emotion, joy, sadness and never ending faith. It is because of all of you that I am alive today, as I look at my sister Martina I am marveled by the love she has for me and of course I worry about her and her health, but as she tells me she is the eldest and she will not back down from this fight to save my life and prove to the world that I am innocent of this terrible crime.

As I look at my mail from across the globe, from places I have never ever dreamed I would know about and people speaking languages and expressing cultures and religions I could only hope to one day see first hand. I am humbled by the emotion that fills my heart with overwhelming, overflowing Joy. I can’t even explain the insurgence of emotion I feel when I try to express the strength I draw from you all, it compounds my faith and it shows me yet again that this is not a case about the death penalty, this is not a case about Troy Davis, this is a case about Justice and the Human Spirit to see Justice prevail.

I cannot answer all of your letters but I do read them all, I cannot see you all but I can imagine your faces, I cannot hear you speak but your letters take me to the far reaches of the world, I cannot touch you physically but I feel your warmth everyday I exist.

FREE PATRICK OKOROAFOR

At The Multicultural Politic, we applaud all those who were involved in the campaign to save Sakine Mohammadi Ashtani, a 43 year old woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery today, as it appears that the Iranian Government has responded to the international outcry by reviewing her death sentence. Her life has been saved by all those who participated whether on Twitter or old fashioned petitions and letter writing, you are all heroes. We now publish here an Amnesty International appeal for a Nigerian prisoner, Patrick Okoroafor may his campaign also receive similar attention.

Patrick Obinna Okoroafor was 14 when he was arrested in 1995 and has now been in prison for 15 years – half of his lifetime.

The Rise of European Fascism & Roma Persecution

At The Multicultural Politic, we support campaigns against discrimination everywhere and anywhere in the world. Across Europe and especially in Hungary and Slovakia, the global recession has strengthened far-right parties and fascist groups. The Gypsy and Roma people have been at the front line of persecution and discrimination especially by these groups in Eastern Europe.

UK Thailand Solidarity Campaign Strategy Meeting – 28th June 2010 6pm, London

As long as injustice continues and the Abhisit government continues to act with impunity we will campaign against them. It is laughable and a mockery for the UN to unanimously elect Thailand’s ambassador in Geneva to be head of the Human Rights Council this week.

The UK section of the International Solidarity for Thailand Campaign is holding their second open planning meeting on Monday 28th June 2010 from 6pm to 8pm.

Towards the end of 2009, Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga decided to openly consecrate their love for one another and make history, by becoming the first Malawian gay married couple. Two days later, they were arrested and charged with “unnatural practices between males”, they were also forced to go through a humiliating and intrusive medical examination to gather ‘evidence’ for trial.

Earlier this week, sixty-five British MPs have signed a House of Commons Early Day Motion (EDM 564), which condemns Malawi’s arrest and trial of Monjeza, 20 and Chimbalanga, 26. The two men love each other and have harmed no one. But they could be jailed for up to 14 years. According to an interview in the Times Mr Monjeza, who claimed to be beaten in jail and appeared to be disorientated — said: “I love my husband and laws should not prohibit love.”
