Stop Nadine Dorries’ abstinence education bill!

TAKE ACTION NOW! Please write to your MP and urge them to vote against the proposals. You can also come to the protest happening on 20 January outside Parliament, which the BHA and other groups are supporting.
Tomorrow, 20 January, Nadine Dorries’ proposed Sex Education (Required Content) Bill, which seeks to secure abstinence education for girls only, is due to have its ‘second reading’ in the House of Commons. In May 2011 MPs voted the Bill through its first stage by 67 to 61 votes.
A demonstration opposing the Bill is due to take place outside Parliament on the same day, supported by the British Humanist Association (BHA), Abortion Rights, Liberal Conspiracy, Education for Choice, the National Secular Society, Parents and Carers for Sex and Relationships Education (P4SRE), the Socialist Party, Youth Fight for Jobs, Feminist Fightback, Queers Against the Cuts, Slut Means Speak Up, Bristol Feminist Network and Left Front Art. Although it is unlikely that the Bill will proceed further than second reading, and perhaps may not get time to be debated, the demonstration and other actions have been arranged to draw attention to yet another attack by a political and often religiously motivated lobby on good quality SRE which could, if implemented, impact negatively on young people’s health and education.
The first tweeted #PMQS translation of 2012
It was the first PMQs of 2012, and Ed Miliband didn’t appear to have much of a comforting break. Perceived harsh criticisms from his guru, Lord Glasman, tepid polling, shortly followed by his embarrassing blackbusters’ gaffe. David Cameron meanwhile has postured on executive pay, made some potentially counterproductive interventions on the future referendum on Scottish independence. Also this week heralded the ground breaking Spartacus Report being published and released. Here is our take on what happened on that day…

George Osborne can’t even privatise competently

Policymakers should have two goals when dealing with Northern Rock: Maximising taxpayer receipts and enabling more people to buy their own homes.
The government claims that even if the deal is a complete dogs dinner, then at least they have got the best deal for Northern Rock, but this is highly doubtful.

“Riot” Evictions Campaign update
On Friday 12th August, three days after the England riots had come to an end, the Conservative Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles declared on the BBC that “looters should be evicted”. David Cameron later that day, had given his “full backing” for councils to evict entire families. Wandsworth Council had already served an eviction notice on Wednesday 10th, to Maite de la Calva even though her 18 year son, Daniel Sartain-Clarke is still yet to be convicted with riot related charges. The mother of two who took no part in the London riots and has stated fear for her 8 year old daughter’s education and well-being, has accused the Local Authority for behaving like “fascists”.
In London, four councils had publicly stated to evict “rioters”, there were two Conservative: Westminster and Hammersmith & Fulham, and two Labour: Southwark and Greenwich.

The Tweeted #PMQs on Welfare Reform Bill Day
So it was the big day for Welfare Reform Bill, with plans of cutting benefit to disabled children, cancer patients and families living in adequate accommodation. Labour had a big chance to show whose side they were on and… well read it for yourself.

PM: Labour support the cuts and we’re sacking police pen pushers
