Why I’m standing for Unite Against Fascism Assistant Secretary

Why I’m standing for Unite Against Fascism Assistant Secretary

As a dedicated anti-fascist and socialist, I’ve worked with many people to fight against hatred and ideologies that divides communities and can lead to genocide. In 2008, after the British National Party got elected to the Greater London Authority, Croydon Trade Union Council and Battersea & Wandsworth Trade Union Council decided to set up South London Anti-Fascists Group, which has worked with both Unite Against Fascism (UAF) and Hope Not Hate as well as other groups.

I have chaired South London Anti-Fascists Group for the last 4 years, in that time we have:

  • Led local campaigns with support from across the Left – from anarchists to Labour councillors
  • Built alliances in local trade union councils, branches as well as migrant, LGBT and faith communities
  • Used direct action to disrupt BNP activity
  • Reduce the BNP’s vote through community organising

The curious story of when the EDL came to Barking

image

by @justinthelibsoc

The callout came late on Thursday night, I received a text message forwarded from a friend stating Steve Hedley from the RMT has called for a counter-demo to oppose the English Defence League in Barking.

UAF made a similar callout on Friday, I was surprised that staunch anti-fascists were apparently either caught unaware until short notice or decided only belatedly to hold a counter-demo. I suspect the reason was the latter. Barking & Dagenham Council, formerly the electoral stronghold of the British National Party had allowed the English Defence League to march through the Town Centre, assemble in front of the Town Hall and loudly play music in a residential area.

Video: Best response to My Tram Experience

The  My Tram Experience video stirred lots of debate about multiculturalism in London, and if London really was as racist as this woman.

Though a wannabe mini-Nick Griffin applauded that troubled woman’s rants, at TMP Towers, this video has won our award of best response to the racism:

Though many regard this tragic experience as a rarity, unfortunately more videos of racist abuse on public transport have emerged including this one by a different woman who declares herself a BNP supporter.

Racism has a long history in Britain, and under the present economic environment these ideas may become more prevalent and gain more sympathy as it did in 2008.

TMP Editor on Al Jazeera

In the early hours of the morning of 7th May, as the results were coming in for the British General Election 2010. I appeared on Al Jazeera English News Channel to speak on two topics:

  1. Proportional Representation and what it means for far-right parties like the British National Party
  2. The Barking “Hodge vs Griffin” results from an anti-fascist perspective, I was billed as “Hope Not Hate” though I asked to be named a representative of “South London Anti-Fascist Group”

My debut on Al Jazeera is below, filmed and uploaded on to YouTube by a good colleague of mine and now on The Multicultural Politic for you to enjoy/lament/laugh at:

My friend was just attacked by a local BNP ‘thug’

A personal friend of TMP, Cormac Hollingsworth, who is also a Labour candidate has been attacked by a British National Party supporter whilst campaigning in Bermondsey on Monday 3rd May.

Cormac Hollingsworth was leafleting an estate on Monday evening when he was punched three times in the face and kicked. Meanwhile the attacker kept up a stream of insults and shouted pro-BNP slogans.

What should I say to Margaret Hodge tonight?

margaret-hodge-arc

This is your one and only chance to use me as a proxy to put your thoughts and feelings across to Margaret Hodge MP for Barking, and Minister of State,  Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Tonight I am speaking at a post-show discussion of “A Day at the Racists” at the Finborough Theatre, SW10. I’m going to ask her to apologise for claiming in the Observer in May 2007 that immigrants were the reason that white working class people couldn’t get council housing in Barking & Dagenham.
